MTD Penalties Explained: Points, £200 Fines, and the 12-Month Grace Period

Updated 2026-06-11 · MTD Survival Kit team

MTD's penalty system is genuinely fairer than the old £100-the-moment-you're-late regime — it forgives the occasional slip and punishes the chronic. Here's how it works, what the much-discussed grace period actually covers, and the boring system that makes all of it irrelevant.

The points system

Every late submission earns one penalty point. For quarterly submitters the threshold is four points — reach it and HMRC issues a £200 fine, then another £200 for each further late submission while you remain at the threshold.

Points aren't forever: individual points expire after 24 months (if you stay under the threshold), and once at the threshold you can reset to zero by meeting every deadline for 12 months and filing everything outstanding.

With four quarterly updates plus a tax return each year, a chronically late taxpayer hits £200 territory within a year. An occasionally late one never pays a penny.

The 2026 grace period — precisely what it covers

If you're in the April 2026 wave, HMRC will not issue points for late quarterly updates during your first 12 months. Three caveats people miss:

Treat the grace year as free practice at the routine, not a year off.

Late payment is a different (worse) animal

Points punish late submissions. Pay your actual tax late and a separate regime applies: interest from the first day, plus escalating percentage penalties the longer the bill stays unpaid past 31 January. Nothing about MTD changed payment deadlines — but the quarterly tax estimates your software shows after each update are the fix for the January shock. Check the estimate, move the money to a savings pot, done.

The system that makes penalties irrelevant

Four recurring calendar reminders: 5 July, 5 October, 5 January, 5 April — "reconcile the quarter" (30–45 minutes with decent records). Then submit in the first week of the deadline month, days early. That's the entire defence: roughly an hour per quarter.

The "decent records" part is what the MTD Survival Kit (£19) handles — a spreadsheet pre-mapped to HMRC's categories with the quarterly summary built in, plus a one-page checklist per quarter. Not sure you're even in scope yet? Start with the free 2-Minute MTD Checker.
